"The Shack"

The shack is a perfect place for a romantic get-away for two, or for a small group of family or friends who don't mind being close to each other. We find that groups of up to about five are very comfortable here. Many people have told me how much they enjoyed their time here without the normally ever-present television and phone, that so often get in the way of conversation.

The Shack has bedding provided for up to seven people, but we generally don't recommend it for groups much larger than five, these groups generally find the large cabin more to their liking.

The "Shack" as we call the small cabin may not a thing of real beauty from the outside, but looks can be deceiving, just step inside and see for yourself.

A few steps inside the front door. Looking from the other direction.

In the first picture you can see the glass fronted wood stove which makes for a wonderful atmosphere in the cabin when it's cold and snowy outdoors. You can relax in the rocking chair or on one of the sofas and either look out across beautiful "East Burn's Valley" or watch the fire burning in the stove... a great way to relax. Of course if you visit in the warmer months you will miss out on this opportunity, but when it's hot outdoors there is an air-conditioner to help keep the cabin cool.

In the next picture you can see the kitchen, which is equipped with a refrigerator, microwave oven, two burner hotplate and all the cooking and eating utensils you will need.

On the first level there is a bathroom with a composting toilet as described in The Humanure Handbook. Some people are frightened away by this simple yet efficient method of dealing with human waste, but we have had many more visitors who are interested in the process. A vacationing Health Inspector reassured us that he had no problems with this toilet, either in the use of it or the composting of the resultant matter. A family visiting from France who stayed with us for 6 weeks were in no way bothered by it, in fact the elderly parents were fascinated by the concept. We have had Doctors, a Lawyer, a Nun and people from many other professions who did not "turn their noses up" at this toilet; because if it is used correctly there is no odor. The bathroom is in all other ways modern with running hot and cold water and a tub shower and vanity unit.

This picture shows a sofa that folds out to a queen size bed and next to it the removable ladder that leads to the loft. In the loft there are two queen size beds side by side and a single mattress on the floor in a section of the loft with a lower roof.

A Spring view, from down in the valley looking up toward the Shack. This picture shows the beautiful fall colors seen from the loft in mid October.
