There's nothing wrong with being different.

I found this interesting article entitled "Embrace Your Eccentricity" which tells of the health benefits of being a "little crazy". I feel that these benefits arise because Eccentrics follow the beat of their own drums instead of marching along in time to a rhythm that they just don't get. Our society has created a lot of people who think that they are "individuals" but for some strange reason they all need to wear the same brand of shoes, jeans or t-shirts with the same slogan or images of pop idols. Some of these "individuals" will sometime laugh at the lifestyle or dress of the Amish... little understanding in themselves that they are just as regimented as this religious group in many ways, yet without the benefits of really belonging that these people enjoy.

the artwork of Alan Parker I have met many brilliant people who supposedly have a "disorder", when most of them merely have brains that work differently to the average person's. They learn better when able to move around and use their bodies, but because they have problems sitting at a desk for hours on end they are often medicated to force them to fit into society's mold. I personally think that kids who can sit still for prolongued periods are the ones who can't possibly be the normal, healthy young of our species. I don't like labels, I particularly don't like to hear children say "I have attention deficit disorder" as though this handy label covers them for any wrong doings. It is becoming an excuse for all sorts of bad behaviors, and the quick-fix method of dealing with it teaches children that society believes that drug use will cure their problems.

I would like to thank Teresa from the Born to Explore website for permission to use this graphic, and of course special thanks to Alan Parker the artist. Born to Explore explores the positive side of those whose personalities cause them to be labelled ADD.
