The self contained apartment where visitors stay is upstairs in the house as seen in the wintry picture above. The sofa folds out to a queen size bed for extra sleeping space if the bedrooms are full. The small but functional kitchen has a gas range, refrigerator, microwave oven, toaster and cooking and eating utensils.
The bedroom is a nice sunny room with beautiful views over the valley.
A strange view from the bedroom window.
The second bedroom catches the morning sunlight.
It has a view of "Sugar Loaf" a local landmark.
The bathroom has a composting toilet as described in The Humanure Handbook. Some people are frightened away by this simple yet efficient method of dealing with human waste, but we have had many more visitors who are interested in the process. A vacationing Health Inspector reassured us that he had no problems with this toilet, a family visiting from France who stayed in the small cabin for 6 weeks were in no way bothered by the composting toilet there, in fact the elderly parents were fascinated by the concept. We have had Doctors, a Lawyer, a Nun and people from many other professions who did not "turn their noses up" at this type of toilet, because if it used correctly there is no odor.
